The Importance of Glycemic Index When You’re Trying to Lose Weight

Consuming nutrient-dense, low-glycemic foods keeps your blood sugar levels within the optimal fasting blood sugar range of 70-99 mg/dl. This enables you to burn fat efficiently.

Eating high Glycemic Index (GI) foods causes insulin to flood your bloodstream to lower your glucose levels. In turn, this action triggers intense hunger by causing your blood sugar to crash abruptly.

So, here’s the long story made short. Eating high GI meals day in and day out will cause your blood sugar to remain in an elevated state.

Having a fasting blood glucose between 100–125 mg/dl means that you’re already in the pre-diabetes limbo. It is not an incorrigible condition that inevitably segues to type 2 diabetes.

The constant high levels of insulin in the blood signals the body to store fat since insulin is a fat-storing hormone. The inevitable result is unwanted weight gain. So for you to lose weight and to maintain the weight loss indefinitely, then you’d have to stick to a low GI diet religiously. This is how you correct a wacky metabolism—by keeping blood sugar levels on an even keel at all times via low GI meals.

But the health benefits of following a low GI diet doesn’t stop at weight loss. It also dramatically reduces your risk factors for epidemics such as heart disease, cancer, hypertension, obesity, and stroke.

All of those are either aggravated or secondarily caused by soaring blood sugar levels. That’s because type 2 diabetes can serve as the gateway to other degenerative conditions. Some include diabetes complications such as renal failure, neuropathy, gangrene, and blindness.
